Earth Day 2025 – Strengthening the Link Between Anti-Corruption and Environmental Protection

Earth Day 2025 – Strengthening the Link Between Anti Corruption and Environmental ProtectionThis Earth Day, SELDI joins global citizens in recognizing the 55th anniversary of Earth Day—a pivotal moment to reflect on our collective responsibility to protect the environment and promote sustainable development. The 2025 theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” underscores the urgent need to transition to renewable energy, with global organizers calling for renewable energy generation to be tripled by 2030.

This message comes at a critical time. According to the World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report 2025, environmental threats now comprise half of the top 10 global risks over the next decade. The top three—extreme weather events, biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse, and critical changes to Earth’s systems—highlight the accelerating consequences of climate inaction and mismanagement of natural resources.

Earth Day is more than an environmental observance—it is a reminder that environmental protection and anti-corruption efforts are deeply interconnected. Weak governance, lack of transparency, and corruption in resource management directly undermine progress in combating climate change, preserving natural ecosystems, and ensuring fair access to clean energy.

As a regional initiative committed to good governance and transparency, SELDI (Southeast Europe Leadership for Development and Integrity) highlights the critical role of anti-corruption measures in advancing environmental sustainability. From illicit logging and illegal mining to misappropriation of green transition funds, corruption threatens the very foundations of sustainable development.

In response, SELDI continues to:

  • Promote civic engagement and grassroots activism to monitor environmental violations and advocate for cleaner energy futures;
  • Strengthen policy reforms and institutional accountability to prevent abuse of environmental and climate-related funds;
  • Foster regional cooperation for more resilient and transparent environmental governance;

Earth Day serves as a powerful reminder that environmental protection is inseparable from the fight against corruption. Corruption exacerbates environmental degradation by enabling illegal logging, mining, land grabbing, and the misuse of climate adaptation and mitigation funds. These practices not only threaten ecosystems but also undermine trust in public institutions and delay progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This Earth Day, SELDI calls on policymakers, civil society, and citizens to recognize the power of transparency as a tool for climate action. Together, through informed civic participation and stronger governance, we can protect our planet—and our future.
