Asset declarations are strong, but under-used instruments for corruption and illicit finance prevention among civil servants, particularly politically exposed persons (PEPs). There are multiple reports by media and civil society on the gap between the living standard of politicians and their families, and what is officially declared. As part of their anti-corruption toolbox, all SEE-9 counties have put in place a legal framework regulating asset declarations, as noted by the second SEE Good Governance Report. It aims to bring transparency to the political processes and to provide opportunities for society and investigative media to hold decision-makers accountable.
