Corruption Perceptions in Bosnia and Herzegovina: Civil Society and Institutions Unite for Reform

The Centre for Contemporary Politics presented the key findings of the Perception of Corruption in Bosnia and Herzegovina Report. Based on data from the SELDI Corruption Monitoring System, the report indicates a significant level of public distrust in national institutions. These findings highlight an urgent need for stronger and more coordinated institutional responses to restore citizen confidence.

The event, held on 17 March 2026 in Sarajevo, gathered representatives of public institutions and civil society organizations. SELDI’s small grantees also had the opportunity to share their research and recommendations. Perpetuum mobile (Banja Luka) showcased the initiative “Zero Tolerance for Corruption” advocating for increased youth resilience to corruption through education and active involvement, while association Baby Steps (Sarajevo) discussed the findings of their report “Corruption in Healthcare: (In)accessible Justice”. The speakers further emphasized the challenges related to detection and prosecution of corruption cases.

Damirka Mioč, Deputy Director of the Agency for Prevention of Corruption and Coordination of the Fight against Corruption of Bosnia and Herzegovina (APIK) delivered a keynote speech. She stressed the necessity of strengthening coordination, strategic frameworks, and monitoring mechanisms to ensure the effective implementation of anti-corruption policies.

The discussion drew particular attention to the need for increased institutional transparency and the active engagement of the younger generation in anti-corruption efforts. The participants concluded that tackling corruption requires a comprehensive, long term strategy that moves beyond simple monitoring. This approach should focus on strengthening the capacity and integrity of the judiciary while simultaneously integrating ethics and transparency into formal school systems. To support these structural changes, the experts called for collaborative public awareness campaigns with the media to encourage reporting and enhance overall accountability.
